Connecting Threads SAQA Regional Exhibit by Martha Ginn

Martha Ginn wrote the following report. My entry pictured at right is Butterfly 17" x 17".

I just returned from Little Rock, AR, where I attended the opening reception of "Connecting Threads," a Studio Art Quilt Associates regional exhibit of Contemporary Art Quilts at the Butler Center Galleries of the Arkansas Studies Institute. SAQA regional reps Deb Kuster and Michelle Jones had done a great job of arranging and hosting our first exhibit for the LA/MS/AR/AL region.

The exhibit was curated by fiber artist Amie Adelman, associate professor of fibers, College of Visual Arts and Design, University of North Texas in Denton. Amie attended the opening and the following day presented a program of her works and also discussed and critiqued each work in the exhibit.

The exhibit will run through April 28 and includes 23 quilts from 15 artists in the region: Barbara Carlson, Darlene Garstecki, Michelle Jones, Deborah Kuster, Georgia Lewis, Judy Tipton Rush, Margie Trembley, and Ruth Anne Yax from Arkansas; Donna Leigh Jackins, Murray Johnston, and Dorothy West from Alabama; and Martha Ginn, Sheri Marshall, Sarah Scott, and Marcus Weekley from Mississippi.

Pocket Purse from 6 inch Practice Quilting Block

Do you have many practice quilt sandwiches just lyingaround? Well, I had practiced some designs with gold thread onleftover drapery lining laundered several times to remove the soil-resistantfinish. The gold thread, used on topand bottom, really looked great. Needing to make another sample Pocket Purse, I hand dyed the fabric. The batting shrunk, giving the fabric a greattexture.

With the quilted fabric, I was able to leave out the lining,so it only took about 30 minutes to make the Pocket Purse. To dress it up, I used a gold paint stick inthe center of each design. Then I rubbedsome leftover flecks on the zipper. Itook an 1/8" strip of the dyedsandwich and zigzag stitched over it with the gold thread to make a matchingcording and added large-eyed beads. In less than an hour, I had a greatlooking Pocket Purse and had used up some of my supplies. A win-win!

Finishing the bottom of the Jitter Bucket

Q. MM:

I have your buckets gone wild pattern for the jitter bucket. I am going to make them for my granddaughter. How is the outside bottom of the bucket finished. ( the part that the bucket sits on).

At the very end of the printed instructions there is a paragraph in italics that tells how to cover the bottom. If it is not on your pattern, please let me know and I will send it to you. Also the attached site may be helpful.

New Marker from Marilyn

Marilyn Swartout asked for suggestions on marking pencils for the MB pleats. I told her my suggestions for chalk markers, mechanical pencils, and soap slivers, but she had a better one. She said, "Also, when marking I grabbed a charcoal pencil that I use for painting. It worked wonderfully - seemed to show up on light or dark fabric and wiped right off. This is what is written on the pencil "Generals Pastel Chalk 4474 Dk. Grey." Gotta try it!

Jitter Bucket size

Q. What object is used as the base for the jitter bucket? 5 quarts. ??? Love your patterns! Thanks Cindy

A. It is a 5 quart plastic paint bucket sold at the Big Box stores. Some ice cream still comes in the traditional 5 quart size but most are now 4 quart.

Baby Shower Gift

SM made this cute Kitty Scoop Bucket for a baby shower! She said she wished she had added trim to the tops of the pockets. Not too late...Liquid Stitch and clothes pins or clips would hold ribbon or any trim. I attached a pocket flap to a prototype bag I'm making, and it's still holding after 3 weeks. Time to finish that pattern.....

Sassy Kat Adjustments

The only kitty bucket I could find with a wire bale is 12.5 tall and the diameter across in the inside is 11 and 11.5 outside. Since this is my first one and want to use it for a baby shower, I want it to look nice. How would you suggest I enlarge the pattern to make it fit?

The pattern has an adjustment for a 12 inch high bucket. I would add an inch to the bottom of the body on the outside. You could increase the depth of the pockets by a half inch, but I probably wouldn’t. Regarding the inside measurements, the pattern is made for a 10 by 12 inch bucket. I would just draw a pattern from the base of your kitty litter bucket and add a half inch to all sides. So if your bucket was 11 X 11 inches, I would make a rounded square bottom 12 X12. That would allow for a half inch seam allowance on all sides. Pin the darts and fit the body to your new base before you do any stitching.

BTW, I use both the wire and the plastic bales. I would love to have a picture of your finished bucket. What a great idea! Let me know if you have any questions.

Does the center piece do anything except divide it in half. I am thinking I don't want it divided.
The center piece serves no structural purpose. The walls of the kitty scoop bucket are rigid enough to hold it’s shape without the wooden dowel in the center divider. Sounds like a winner to me.

Jitter Bucket Drawstring Top

The drawstring top works really well if you are planning to carry small items inside the Jitter Bucket.

Cut two 6 x 14 inches of contrasting or matching fabric.
Cut two 30 inches of 1/4” wide ribbon.
Turn under and hem the short edges.
Make a ½ inch casing on one long edge of each.
Edge finish the other long edges.
Before sewing the side seams of the Jitter Bucket attach to the bucket ½ inch above the center divider with the finished edge toward the bottom of the bucket.
Insert a ribbon into the casings and tie ends together. Insert another ribbon from the opposite side and tie ends.

Size of Mugs for Mug Bucket Pattern

The size of the mugs I use are about 3 ¾ inches high and 3 to 3 ¼ in diameter. The orange one with the ties on this blog is the above size and it is a perfect fit. I often buy them at Goodwill. In the last few years, coffee mugs have become supersized.

If you plan to use an oversized mug, allow more room at the center fold lines and perhaps increase the same amount at the top fold line for the inner pockets.

Mug Bucket, Key Change Pocket Purse, Walker Tote Patterns

Thank you so much! I'm looking at the patterns now and thinking I could have a lot of fun with gift giving for my daughters and sisters. Also, your site had the walker tote which I was delighted to see. My younger sister has been diagnosed (at the tender age of 48) with bone marrow cancer and was on a walker within days. Jitter Buckets for TV remotes, office supplies and male gifts

I made one for my husbands TV remotes et al, and I made it out of the fake leather cloth and it worked very well and looked very masculine. I have already made 4, 2 for gifts and 2 for us, now my husband needs one in his computer room. I could not find my pattern anywhere, I was glad I could find it on the 'net.

Cup size for Mug Bucket pattern

Someone wrote today that her finished Mug Bucket wasn't big enough for her mug and wanted to know what size mug was needed.

The pattern was made for the traditional smaller mugs. If you plan to use an oversized mug, allow more room at the center fold lines and perhaps increase the same amount at the top fold line for the inner pockets.

Baste half inch tapes or ribbons, each about 3 inches long, above and below the markers for the Velcro on each side of the Mug Bucket.

Catch the tapes in the bias binding.

Tie above and below the mug handle for an alternate closure.

San Francisco pictures and new pattern ideas

I hope to post some of the best pictures of my recent visit to San Francisco with husband and two grandchildren. We had a wonderful time walking the Golden Gate Bridge and the other touristy things.

Now back to sewing and designing. I have a new pattern in the making. Should be ready this week, and I have ideas for another.

Q. I bought your Mug pattern and am new to sewing, is there a more detailed page for pinning/cutting out pattern?

A. No I do not have pictures of cutting out the pattern pieces. What I would suggest is reading the directions on the pattern and looking closely at the photos on the instruction sheet. Everything is place on the fold.

For the pockets, place the folds parallel to a straight edge. For the fabric pockets, fold the fabric down once, then fold it again.

Mug Bucket with ties by KH

KH made this darling Mug Bucket with ties instead of Velcro. She enlarged the pattern slightly to accommodate larger mugs. How clever!!

She has made 16 so far, 7 of which will be given to friends at a retreat. She will sell the remainder at her local Bernina store, where she will be teaching a Mug Bucket class.

I thought it would be great to make another layer of pockets in clear vinyl and make them slots for pictures of family, friends or places visited. I see unlimited possibilities. You can see on the one picture how to pleat the full size pocket. The vinyl pocket is about an inch shorter and stitched every other pleat.

Thanksgiving 2009

I had an early Thanksgiving with my youngest daughter, her 11 year old son, my other grandson 13, my nineteen year-old granddaughter and her friend. The boys helped cook in some creative ways. One opened the cans of corn and poured them in a pot. The other opened the green beans cans, and hearing me say put them in the pot and not paying attention to the other pot nearby, poured the green beans, both cans, over the corn. A new dish was created.

The boys also made the fruit salad. The oldest, directed to slice the bananas in inch slices, did so in short order and then asked, "Did you want them peeled?" Actually, it was very good day

Here is a photo of my FABULOUS Mug Bucket that I made from your AWESOME pattern! I am a stay-at-home-mom, and I also sew for a living and this is the handiest-dandiest thing I have come across to have all my & "essentials" by my side so my little girl can't get into them. Have you ever bought more than you could carry? I do it all the time. In Hawaii recently, I really overdid it. My purse was too small, my tote bags too big and bulky.

At Discount Fabrics in Kona on the Big Island, I bought 45 inches (a perfect square) of this beautiful batik.

I tied opposite corners together in a double knot, leaving two inch tails. I tied the remaining corners in an overhand knot making 12 inch tails.

Then I tied these long tails together in a double knot for a perfect carrier for my shopping and later as a beach bag when we went on to Honolulu. My husband never objected to carrying it, and even once asked where was his "beach bag." Being on the bias, it doesn't slip off your shoulders.

Also I put the opening over my head and gave the load a quick twist to make a sort of fanny pack that distributed the weight over my hips and lower spine instead of my shoulders.

Four yards of fabric, 2 water bottles, wallet, makeup bag, journal and a sketch pad were in this bag on my shoulder and there was room for more.

I chose batik because it doesn't fray and looks good on both sides. Hand-dyes would do the same. I think I'll put a narrow hem on the raw edges now that I am home - after I rake those leaves!

MUG BUCKET & NEW SASSY KAT BUCKET

Kathy suggested the following: On the silk Mug Bucket, I would possibly embroider the recipient's name or greeting ("for Georgia with thanks, Kathy" or "I belong to Kathy") or some little quip like "Live, Love, Laugh" around the top. Or cutsey "Kathy's Krafty Bucket". If it was a gift for a teacher I would suggest embroidering apples and a-b-c on the outer pockets, if a gift for a new baby doing "baby" items or abc's. Depends on the reason for the gift. It also makes a great gift for a college student's desk in the school colors.

I have one I bought years ago, commercially made, and I use it on my sewing/craft table. I stuffed one of the side pockets and covered the stuffed pocket top with fabric and use it as a pin cushion. It has so many possibilities.

The Sassy Kat Bucket would be cute covered with maybe canvas and the little kids could use it to carry their sand toys. It's also sturdy enough that they could sit on it. We have a very small (2x4) raised sand box/water box for our 1 yr. old grandbabies to play in and the Sassy Kat Bucket is just the right size for them. The bigger buckets make great "storage" seats for Polly Pockets and soldiers and legos and all those small toy sets. That's something we used when our own kids were little. I covered the lids for seats and the kids painted the sides with pictures.

Just some of my thoughts. Aren't buckets wonderful !!!

I made the Mug Bucket pattern in silk Dupioni for a friend and then couldn't part with it. I plan to make another and embroider on the pockets and possibly around the top. I have received some good ideas that I will post later.
